Rarely will we find a person, even if they have a great body, who is completely happy with every area. Everyone has that one or two problem areas, be it love handles, flabby arms, hips, or of course that place that so many of us fight, the belly fat. If we could just target all of our efforts toward that area, we would all be happy as clams. Unfortunately, it can't be done.
Spot weight reduction is just a myth. As hard as unscrupulous marketers try to convince us that with their "revolutionary" new product you can systematically nip and tuck wherever you target, it can't be done. Now to clarify, we are talking about spot reducing, not spot enlarging. You can certainly build muscle in a certain area by working that specific area. You can even build up one arm and not the other by only working the one (although it might look rather bizarre). But if those muscles are hidden by a layer of fat, peeling off that layer is a fool's errand.
Losing fat in a certain area is like draining a bathtub of water and wishing for only one side to drain. Taking weight off requires a total workout and diet plan, and if done right nature will take it off where it feels like losing it. In time, all of that excess fat that you want to come off will finally shed. But it really takes a long-term commitment to make it happen, because finally achieving those six-pack abs will only last as long as you commit to keeping them there.
So let's say you have a little paunch and are going all out for those six-packs. You've heard that you can make it happen by doing 500 crunches a day, but after many days of labor nothing seems to be happening. The truth is, you could well be building up muscle, but it's covered by a layer of fat. And before those muscles appear, you will have to take away this fat.
Those crunches that you have been doing so diligently are perhaps making some inroads, but on a very minor basis. This is because if you are eliminating fat, it is done on a more integrated system of fat reduction throughout the entire body. If all you're doing is crunches, you will probably give up long before those six-packs make their appearance.
This is a more reliable approach: take off the fat first with a proper diet and exercise program. This is the best way to lose fat, and it will come off not as you dictate but by nature's way. Only after you have fulfilled those requirements can you focus on the abdominals to build those six-packs.
In our technology-driven world, our bodies still function the way they have for countless generations: by nature. To make the body do what we want it to do, we have to be grounded in what it has been designed to do through evolution. A consistent diet, regular exercise and a whole lot of patience is the only way we will be able to look and feel optimally.
Contrary to what we're told, if we want to lose weight in a certain area we need a Workout and Diet plan that takes fat from everywhere. Getting Proper Diet and Exercise should do that, but like with everything that is good there are no shortcuts. Rich Carroll is a writer and health enthusiast living in London.
