How is my BMI calculated?
Let's say our example human is 5' 11" tall, and weighs 170 lbs.
First convert the height to inches (5 X 12 = 60, plus 11), equals 71 inches tall.
Next square this number (71 X 71) = 5041.
Now take the person's weight and multiply it by 703, (170 X 703) = 119,510
Lastly divide 119,510 by 5041, giving us a BMI value of 23.1

Along with weight a person's waist is considered as an indicator of health. An adult female should have a waist of below 35" and an adult male should be below 40".

Doctors use this calculation to quickly determine if a person is at risk for cardiovascular diseases; however there are many other tools a doctor can use to more accurately determine a person's body fat. They range from options that can be done in one's home and are inexpensive to those that require a doctor to administer and are very expensive. After the quick calculation the doctor may take other factors into consideration to determine the ultimate risk of the person. If your calculation falls outside the normal range you should consult your doctor for further advice.
Having a healthy weight is important in preventing diseases and you will most likely have more energy and better mental health as well. Having a healthy weight should be your daily goal. Diet and exercise are critical to getting and maintaining a healthy weight.
Now run the calculation above and if your BMI falls outside the normal range don't be discouraged as there are many options available for you that can correct this. Consult your doctor for advice on steps that can be taken to achieve your new goal.
