How many times a day do you think about the future? What will I do when I lose weight? How great my life will be. What clothes I'll be able to wear. How I will meet the man or lady of my dreams? How I'll make my husband or wife desire me all over again and be proud of me. How I'll finally prove to everyone that even though I've dieted for years I can finally say I'm slim, look great and feel fantastic!
Don't make a question such as "will I" and "when I do something" the start of your every thought- Will I ever be able to lose weight? When I go running every day my life will change. Will I have the self discipline to lose weight? Am I good enough? Should I be exercising more? Do people like me? And so it goes on. If you want to help yourself to slim down don't constantly worry about the future and equally are you blaming things that have happened in the past? Are you blaming your weight gain on things that have happened in the past - your childhood, being bullied at school, not getting the job you wanted, your marriage, your divorce, your finances, your lack of willpower.
As the famous saying goes - the past is history. You can't change it but you can learn from it. You might feel acutely the pain of all that has gone on in your life and it can overwhelm you and dominate your life - if you let it. You have a choice. You can be aware of your feelings and not let it overwhelm you. You can acknowledge what has happened and from this moment on DECIDE to be aware of your feelings and be IN CONTROL of the choices you make.
Every day you make thousands of choices - whether to get up half an hour earlier to do a keep fit video - whether to have an apple mid morning or have a full fat latte and a muffin - whether to say no to a dessert or to indulge in a massive slice of Mississippi mud pie. It's your choice. Take accountability - it's your choice. Do you want help to slim down? If you want to live the life you want, you need to take control and make the right choices otherwise someone else will. Don't say I'm never going out for a meal again until I've lost weight. Life will pass you by. Make sensible choices. Go out for the meal, have fun with your friends but THINK and make sensible choices. You can slim down. What you need to choose is Balance. Your life is happening NOW not when you lose weight, can fit into a pair of size 10 jeans or look great in a bikini. You won't have this moment ever again. Don't lose it. Enjoy it. Start living in the moment. Balance your life, enjoy the moment now with great choices that will support your future. This isn't hard, if you want help to slim down, help yourself by making the right choices.
Whenever I see one of the numerous documentaries on the TV telling us about physical difficulties that people overcome in their everyday lives such as massive burns, losing limbs, blindness, deafness it makes me realise how lucky I am. It makes me realise that we all need to be happy and appreciative for what we have. It's easy to be happy living in the moment when it's a happy occasion such as a wedding, birthday or graduation. You need to become aware of living and enjoying the moment because if you dwell on the past and have resentments and regrets about your life you are denying yourself the ability to LIVE and be HAPPY in the moment. The Psychologist Abraham Maslow said "I can feel guilty about the past, apprehensive about the future, but only in the present can I act. The ability to be in the present moment is a major component of mental wellness." Try it, Live in the here and now, not in the here and what might have been.
You can choose to be kind to yourself in your quest to slim down. Let go of your feelings of if only I'd done that. Abandon your resentments and regrets forever, they do not help you in your mission to slim down. You need to focus on the moment and don't be too judgemental. Don't concentrate on the good or bad times of your life, as your life is made of millions of more "normal times" such as the sun shining on your face, your children having fun and not arguing, a refreshing glass of lemonade, a smile from a passing stranger, a parking space outside the shop you want to visit, someone holding the door open. You are living in the moment. You may be heavier than you'd like but you are here now, enjoy it for what it is, a moment in time you won't get back. Be grateful for what you have, what you are and know you are going to make choices to take you to where you want to be.
Some people always want more and make themselves unhappy because are always looking into the future but the future is the future. What we have now is the present moment who knows what is in the future. Enjoy now. Forget the past, you can't change it. Live for the moment that is NOW, it is today. Wake up to the fact that NOW is all we have with certainty. Live it and Love it.
Buddha reportedly said "If we could see the miracle of a single flower clearly, our whole life would change". Maybe if we could see the miracle of our own lives - even if we are carrying an extra 20, 40, 200 lbs - we would appreciate what we have and be happy. You might want a better job, bigger house, exotic holidays, but now is what you have. You are in the present moment, be aware of that and focus on the here and now. Awaken your inner thoughts to NOW. Okay you want help to slim down, that's fantastic that you've recognised it but just because you have goals it doesn't mean that life is not good now. Look at your life, focus your thoughts on "the moment", the present, you are living your life now, don't just let life pass you by. Live it and enjoy it!
