How To Survive Party Temptations When Dieting

If you have ever been invited to a party while you are on a diet, you know what a challenge this offers. Dieting and parties are a dangerous combination.
You want to attend and be social and enjoy being with friends. At the same time, you don't want to ruin your diet now that you are in a routine and are making some real progress. And perhaps most of all there is the core concern that you do not want to make a big deal about being on a diet.
Here are some tips for surviving a party when you are dieting:
  • Don't plan to skip meals the day of the party! Instead, eat your normal breakfast and lunch diet meals. Then eat a snack before going to the party so you don't arrive with an empty stomach. A light, healthy snack lets you be in control of your foods and calories and you can then make "smart choices" at the party.

  • Offer to bring a healthy, diet-friendly dish to the party. Your host or hostess will appreciate your contribution and you are guaranteed to have something "legal" you can enjoy eating.

  • Pile on the veggies! Concentrate on salads and other green veggies. Eat your veggies first to fill up with these nutrient rich and high fiber foods before eating anything else. After veggies, stick to lean proteins You will find that your hunger is appeased so the temptation to overeat is reduced.

  • Think portion control. When there is a wide selection of foods, it is easy to allow your servings end up super-sized. Small plates are a big help with portion control so if there are salad plates available, make them your choice instead of a dinner-sized plate.

  • Stay hydrated. It is always good to drink plenty of water and this is all the more important when dieting and when the weather is hot. Drinking lots of water will help reduce hunger and green veggies like cucumbers and celery are naturally loaded with water, which helps.

  • If alcohol is being served you can choose a drink that skips the alcohol all together or you could mix a little wine with some club soda or diet lemon-lime to make a spritzer. Reducing the amount of alcohol is an important calorie reducer and a spritzer is one of those drinks that can be sipped slowly during a party.

  • Avoid standing near the refreshments. It is too easy to indulge a few times without considering the fat and calories in most hors d'oeuvers. Mingle and be social. Walking around and visiting with other guests is a benefit for dieters.
With these simple guidelines you can happily accept the invitation and enjoy the party. Best of all, you will have the pleasure of knowing you haven't sabotaged your diet!
