How to Live Longer is a topic a lot of people are talking about which immediately starts pointing in many directions. For some of us, the answers or suggestions might seem a little overwhelming if you are not already following a healthy lifestyle, but it's never too soon to start. Here is a list to get you started now. Start with one or two suggestions and move from there.
1. Eat a High Plant Based Diet - this is by far one of the top suggestions on how to live longer. Eating a mostly plant-based diet heavy on beans, legumes, nuts, and green plants will certainly add years to your life because they are rich in antioxidants and alkaline rich foods which help to prevent Cancer, Heart Disease, and Diabetes.
2. Relax - Even with things becoming seemingly more convenient with the help of technological advances, we are still living lives filled with high stress. Stress raises your blood pressure, can lead to conditions such as depression, and creates cortisol which can lead to weight gain. Find ways to take a break in your day for at least an hour with no interaction with people or screens. Try yoga, meditation, or a nice walk.
3. Pay attention to your bowels - Constipation may not seem serious but it can lead to a lot of problems such as weight gain, body odor, skin eruptions, headaches, and fungus build up in the intestinal tract. More severe issues relate to Cancer or Heart Disease. Eat lots of soluble fiber and with the aforementioned fruits and vegetables, you should be on your way to healthier bowels.
4. Sleep a little less - Might seem like a strange answer to how to live longer but if you are getting more than eight hours of sleep a night, you might consider getting up an hour or two sooner. People who get six to seven hours of sleep a night might live longer. Sleeping less than four hours or more than eight hours had significantly higher death rates.
5. Move - This is a crucial step to how to live longer. Move naturally. Find ways to walk whenever possible. Many of us find ourselves spending good portions of our days behind desks which is detrimental to our health. Leading a sedentary life is said to lead to many chronic diseases. Most importantly, exercise is crucial to maintaining a healthy weight, moving toxins from the body, and promotes good mental health and productivity.
6. Eat Smaller Portions - Weight is a huge topic these days and certainly being overweight is NOT how to live longer. Weight gain is not only related to what you eat but how much you eat. Often times eating a diet lacking in nutrients will lead to overeating. Start by making small changes to your diet with the foods I mention at the top. Eating smaller portions of meat and splitting up the amount of food you eat throughout the day can help with hunger and be easier on your system.
7. Belong - How to live longer does not have to be a struggle. Reconnect and explore new interests, faiths, and communities. When you start to connect with others, you are less likely to suffer from depression. When you belong, you feel better and more relaxed. You might take up a new sport, yoga, or interest which gets you out of the house and away from your routine.
