Start with small changes to your eating patterns
Losing healthy weight means making important lifestyle changes, changes that will help you stay healthy well into your future. There are a few things you need to take into consideration when thinking about making these lifestyle changes. As you age, your body will respond differently than when you were younger, meaning that the changes you make will most likely result in slower changes in your body versus someone who is younger. This is simply because as our bodies age, our metabolism starts to slow down and we process foods differently. What this means is that the cheeseburger and fries you used to eat won't be as easily processed as you age. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't and couldn't enjoy a treat. It merely means that you must make small modifications to those treats to ensure your body is able to process them quickly. If it takes too long to process it is more likely to be stored as fat rather than used as energy, which is the purpose of eating.
Start with small changes to your eating patterns.
The best way to ensure your success is to start with small changes to your overall eating habits. If you try to make too many changes too quickly you may find yourself fighting against your instincts and your habits, and both of these are very bad enemies to have. Rather than create an enemy, focus on making the changes so small that your instincts and habits don't notice the difference. This will give you a better chance of continuing the changes into the future, rather than giving up on your plan. There are a number of ways you can accomplish this and most of them can be implemented rather quickly and easily.
Monitor what you eat daily.
Monitoring your food intake with the aim of keeping healthy into the future entails monitoring the types of food you consume, as well as the quantities. Look at your food guides and learn what is healthy and what is not. Choose fruit, nuts, veggies etc instead of pizza, burgers and fries. Choose smaller portions, perhaps from the seniors menu in a restaurant, rather than the half rack of ribs or 12 ounce steak. Just being aware of what you put into your mouth, will often be enough for you to begin on the weight loss journey.
Using meal replacements.
One method you can try is to use is meal replacements. Yes, I am sure you may be thinking that you have already tried meal replacements and it was a complete disaster. That may be true but it was most likely because you tried to do too much too fast. The best way to use meal replacements is gradually and by making a few additions to your eating habits. For example, rather than simply replacing breakfast with a meal replacement shake, consider instead adding small amounts of food every 2 to 3 hours a day. By small I mean small, a piece of fruit, a yogurt, a granola bar, etc. I am not talking about a value meal at a fast food restaurant because that would defeat the purpose. When you add these fruits, veggies, and grains to your diet you are doing several good things for yourself. By eating regularly the 2-3 hour intervals per day you are telling your instincts that you are well fed and you are telling your habits the same thing.
