Why Diets Make You Fat

The very thing you are doing to lose weight, might be making you fat! The word "diet" is common is our society. We look at those going on diets with pity. You would think it's some form of cruel and unusual punishment.
Our diets are what made many of us fat in the first place. It seems every day there is a new fad diet and each one seems more confusing than the next. These are some common diet problems:
Low fat- The low fat diet became popular in the 80's and 90's. Obesity rose at the same time. It's not a coincidence. Our bodies need some fats. Healthy fats in our diets are needed for brain health, energy and even weight loss. Unhealthy fats are a problem. How do we know the difference? Look at where the fat is coming from. Healthy sources of fat include olive oil, coconut oil, organic butter. Some unhealthy fats include packaged goods and fried foods. While this may sound like common sense, we can often be tempted by an ice cream label that says "low fat". If the fat has been removed, it has been replaced with chemicals (and who knows what else) to maintain it's shelf life and texture.
Low Carb- This is another common diet and one that leaves a lot of people confused. The problem with the low carb craze is that it rarely explains the difference between good and bad carbohydrates. Bad carbs (high glycemic) give a quick spike in blood sugar. These are hard on your pancreas and cause drops in energy. They also cause expanding waist lines! Good carbs (low glycemic) should be in your diet daily. These carbs are in the form of fruits and vegetables.
Maybe you are wondering what all of this means. These are some great facts, but how do you use them in daily life? Put simply, eat the diet your grandparents ate. Eat as many whole fruits and vegetables daily as possible. Sweet potatoes, leafy green vegetables and whole fruits are great staples to have in your life. When it comes to meat, look for lean cut meats and avoid pork as much as possible.
Don't get overwhelmed with all of the food information out there. It is easy to use that as an excuse. Start with small, daily steps. Commit to add fruits and vegetables to your diet daily. Add lean meats and healthy fats and remove packaged foods. Making these differences with yield great lifetime results!
