Have you ever wondered why you can't lose weight? I mean you know that you need to lose weight, you try a never-ending conveyor belt of all the latest diets, you pound away on the treadmill hour after hour, day after day, so why can't you lose weight?
I used to be in your situation. Okay so maybe I wasn't as good as I should have been on the contraband calories but I ate a fairly healthy diet, and I would walk around 10 miles a day, and I don't mean a 10 mile stroll, I mean a brisk 10 miles. I really struggled to lose weight, logic said that with what I was doing I should be losing weight, but as I guess most of us have found, logic and reality don't really see eye to eye when it comes to losing weight.
The problem with putting yourself through hell and only making minimal progress is that you start to think where's the point, why do I bother, and it can be far to easy to slip back into a lifestyle that can, and all to often does have serious consequences for your health. The fact is that if we want to stay motivated we need to see positive results, and the more the better.
Do you get any exercise in, because if you don't then you have one of your reasons as to why you can't lose weight. Now I'm not saying that you have to spend countless hours at the gym, you can do something as simple as increasing the amount of walking that you do in the day. Obviously if you don't do a lot at the moment then you need to slowly increase your distances and your pace. When you exercise your body needs energy and to get it, it burns calories. No matter what you do, anything extra that you do will have a beneficial effect on you.
What do you eat? Do you follow a reasonably sensible diet or are you indulge in far too much convenient junk and processed food? What do you drink, do you keep your body properly hydrated, do you drink high calorie soda and fruit juices? You would be surprised at the difference that increasing the amount of fibre in your diet can do to your weight. Do you eat a balanced diet that gives you all the fuel that your body needs to work?
Are you one of these people who don't bother to eat breakfast, if you are then you have just found another reason as to why you can't lose weight. Did you know that your bodies metabolism slows down when you sleep, and did you know that the only way that you can speed it up again is to eat something. Now I start the day with a bowl of cereal that gives me a good dose of carbohydrates, protein, fibre and fat, and it see's me through until lunch. What do you start the day with, a cup of coffee, then do you snack until lunchtime, or do you drag out the hours before you fill up your body with fuel. If you don't eat breakfast, and if you don't eat until lunchtime, then how many hours will you have gone without food? Do you think that starving yourself is good for you?
Your body needs food to make it work. Your body needs specific nutrients to make it work. Just like a car if you don't put any fuel into your belly then you will not work efficiently. You need fibre, protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins and all the other nutrients that make you work.
Are you a yo-yo dieter? Do you try the latest diet for a while and then when it doesn't work quickly enough you move onto the next diet? If you starve your body of the fuel that it needs on a regular basis then there will be a price to pay.
Another problem with regular dieting is that it can result in your gaining weight. When you body becomes used to a cycle of starvation and days of plenty then it will start to build reserves as a store against the days when you starve yourself. The best way that it has to store away that reserve energy is as fat. Unfortunately for you, your body will break down your muscle tissue to store away as fat. Even if you stop dieting, it can, depending on how long you have been abusing yourself for, take a long time before your body can adjust to a normal lifestyle.
Do you try to lose weight quickly so that you can look good at weddings and vacations? Can you tell me what happens when your diet stops? Yo have just forced your body to go through an unnatural period of weight loss, and then do you go back to your old ways? How long does that weight stay off? And when that weight goes back on do you find that you are always that little bit heavier?
If you want to achieve SUSTAINABLE, HEALTHY WEIGHT LOSS, you have to change your lifestyle, if you don't then you have your main reason as to why you can't lose weight. It takes a lot less effort to make lifestyle changes than it does to go on a diet. If you make the changes slowly, giving your mind and body time to get used to them then you will find it a lot easier to lose weight, and more importantly to keep that weight off!!!
When you try to lose weight you need to think about sustainable weight loss. If you cannot sustain your weight loss then eventually you will regain all the weight that you lost, and then some. If you want to achieve your weight loss goals then you have to change your lifestyle, and that can be surprisingly easy.
